How to have adventures at home: join a club

Can’t afford to travel? Have family commitments? Hate getting on planes? Never fear! There are still adventures for you.

I grew up in Norfolk in the East of England, so you’d think I knew the area pretty well, but it turns out actually, I don’t at all. I’ve recently discovered my ignorance by joining a canoe and kayak club. I’ve loved paddling since doing those adventure days as a kid and wanted to improve and progress (I dream of being able to roll), as well as meet new and awesome people. And in just over a month of being a member, I’ve already had adventures.

Join a club
The benefits of joining a club are numerous! But I think the best thing is you get to join in with people that already know what they’re doing. I went on a club trip to wild camp on a marsh. Sounds pretty adventurous right? But all I had to do was show up with my kit and follow everyone else! I got to see my home city from a completely new angle and camp in the wilderness just 17k away from home - without doing any research or using my brain.

Not into paddle sports? What about a running club? Your club mates will have their own routes and experiences to share with you. You’ll probably car-share to events out of your area and even be able to buy race entries off each other. You can discuss sweat-wicking socks and carb-loading with your new friends.

Can’t run/won’t run? What about a walking group? Again, you just have to join in activities that someone else has planned. You won’t be lonely because people will talk to you. Interesting people outside of your normal social circle. It’s like having friends that can be bothered to go walking!

Seriously, there are loads of clubs. Archery, netball, rock climbing, football, hockey, basketball, swimming, even landscape painting, pub crawls, real ale - what have I missed?! All of these will get you out and about, meeting new people, experiencing new places and all within your busy 9-5 schedule.

Top tip: you probably won’t believe that I’m a shy person. Doing new things with new people gives me a level of anxiety. It’s normal to be cautious of a new thing. Do it anyway! The worst that will happen is you don’t like it and you won’t want to go again.

Let me know which club you join. Happy adventuring.
